MACoM Fast Facts: Six Things You Might Not Know About Our Mikvah

Whether you’ve immersed with us many times or are just starting to wonder what a mikvah is, there’s a good chance something about MACoM will surprise you. Here are six quick facts we wish everyone knew about the Metro Atlanta Community Mikvah.

1. For most immersions, you don’t need a witness.

When visiting MACoM, you will always be greeted by a guide who walks you through the entire process and ensures you have everything you need. However, personal immersions for reasons other than conversion do not always require a witness in the Mikvah room. It’s up to you!

2. Celebrate, mourn, heal, or just because.

Many people know mikvah as part of family planning, but the ritual can mark any moment in life. People come to MACoM to celebrate simchas like weddings, birthdays and milestones. They come to mourn, to heal after illness or loss, to begin again. And sometimes they come just because. Whatever brings you, there is a place for you in the water.

3. We’re the only community mikvah in Georgia

MACoM is the only community mikvah in the state, and our doors are open well beyond Atlanta. We regularly welcome people from Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and North Florida who make the trip to immerse with us.

4. Men use the mikvah too

Mikvah isn’t only for women. Men immerse before holidays, before their weddings, on Fridays before Shabbat, and at meaningful moments of their own. All are welcome at MACoM.

5. We’re an independent organization

MACoM sits on the campus of Congregation B’nai Torah, but we are not the B’nai Torah mikvah. We are an independent, community-supported organization that serves every Jew and every community, regardless of affiliation.

6. Nothing you do can make the mikvah unkosher

Worried you’ll do something wrong? Please don’t be. Nothing anyone who is immersing does can make the mikvah unkosher. Our guides are here to walk you through every step, so you can focus on the meaning of the moment.
